たしなみ【嗜み】

1 〔(芸事などの)心得; 教養〕 an [a cultural] accomplishment; culture; 〔趣味〕 (a) taste; a hobby; a pastime.

●武士のたしなみ the necessary accomplishments of a samurai

・茶道のたしなみ (a) knowledge [mastery] of (the) tea ceremony

・かつて裁縫は家庭婦人のたしなみだった. Needlework used to be one of the accomplishments of a housewife.

●これでも多少は武芸のたしなみがある. I have some slight skill at martial art.

・日本舞踊のたしなみがあるだけに, 着物姿が決まっている. She looks all the better in her kimono for knowing something about Japanese dancing.

●長唄のたしなみのある人 a person accomplished at [with a taste for] nagauta.

●和歌を詠むことは平安貴族の当然のたしなみだった. Composing waka poems was naturally expected from Heian nobles.

・私など不調法で何のたしなみもありません. I'm quite uncultured, with no real hobbies.
